Located just outside of Quito in Nono, this charming cafe hosts hundreds of hummingbirds, representing many of the over 100 species found in Ecuador. Feeders are found at the edge of the balcony and the birds fly back and forth over the patio while you eat or simply enjoy a hot cup of the delicious coffee this region has to offer. This spot is a must visit every time we come to Quito. If you are up for a hike, there is an ecological trail that starts near the bathroom and runs down the side of the mountain to the river below. The weather here is usually quite tepid and mild, sometimes rainy however as this region is more Amazonian. Keep your eyes peeled on the way and you may be lucky enough to spot an Oso de Oro, the local bears which are smaller than typical and are vegetarian. Named for the appearance of “eyeglasses” around their eyes due to their unique markings, these bears are very wary of humans and are not easy to find. Prices in the cafe are extremely reasonable, and the food has always been excellent. This is a once in a lifetime experience to be so close to so many different species of hummingbird, I highly recommend.
Safety:
This is a very safe but remote area. The roads leading there are quite windy and there are sometimes rockslides. It can be foggy at certain times of the day affecting visibility. I would recommend having someone familiar with this road take you there.
Tips:
Ask the proprietor for some of the sugar water to hand feed the hummingbirds.
